Can vegan dogs really be healthy?
Much like humans were once thought not to be able to live an active and healthy life without meat, vegan dogs now also fall into this myth. Here’s why we think otherwise.
Q. Is it ok for me to raise my dog on a vegan diet?
A. Yes, vegan dogs are able to thrive on a well designed vegan diet. Benevo products are formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of of your dog in an affordable, tasty and ethical way, so why not?
Q. Will my dog like Benevo vegan dog foods?
A. We would be very surprised if your dog didn’t! Benevo products were first sold in the UK in 2005 and since then have been sold around the world. We have enjoyed a lot of very positive feedback from customers and it is clear from our growing sales that the food is being enjoyed.
Our success is really based on two simple factors; firstly, we developed a recipe that vegan dogs found tasty and kept them in great shape, secondly because satisfied customers choose to stick with Benevo products.
Q. Does your product contain everything that my dog needs?
A. Benevo dog foods are a complete food meaning that no other food is required. You only need to serve the food with some fresh water available. Unlike us humans, with our fascination for variety and trying new things, dogs are usually happy to have the same food every day. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t add other things that your vegan dog will enjoy too for a little variety.
Q. Does your dog food contain L-Carnitine and Taurine?
A. You may have read that these supplements are important for vegan dogs. In fact vegan dogs can get all the nutrients they need either from the food itself, or by synthesis in their liver where they produce Taurine themselves, as we also do. Many types of amino acid, vitamins and minerals are actually naturally part of the ingredients we have selected, so while you may not see them listed on the ingredients or as additives along with some of the vitamins we add to the recipe, you can rest assured that everything vegan dogs need is in the bag!
However, there are a few breeds of dog that may benefit from supplements of Taurine and L-Carnitine because they are unable to produce sufficient amounts themselves. These dogs are therefore genetically predisposed to developing the heart condition Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). These dogs may benefit from treatment with supplements. It may even be possible to avoid the condition developing by supplementing their diet. It is possible to acquire vegetarian supplements of both L-Carnitine and Taurine, they are even available as sports supplements.
It is important to realise that this issue only affects dogs from certain breeds and even then, notall dogs from those breeds. It most commonly occurs among pure bred deep-chested larger dogs, such as Doberman pinschers, Boxers, Great Danes, Dalmations and Afghans. It can also affect some smaller dogs such as cocker spaniels and English bulldogs. If your dog is from one of those breeds we suggest that you seek advice from your vet about checking for this condition.
Q. Can my puppy be fed vegetarian food too?
A. Benevo Vegetarian Puppy Food has been formulated for the growing stage in your dog’s life. It has a number of differences from our adult dog food. Firstly it has much smaller kibble (pieces) which means it is easy for even the smallest mouth to eat. It also has much higher levels of protein, calcium and iron as well as other vitamins and minerals which provide your puppy with additional nutrients while they build up their bones and tissues.
